ShakeAlert Gets Cybersecurity Greenlight

The ShakeAlert system received a conditional Authority to Operate (ATO) from the USGS Office of Enterprise Information (OEI) in March 2018. This is one milestone in the path to broader user of ShakeAlerts including phase on of public alerting.

ShakeAlert system must comply with the Federal Government’s cybersecurity “Assessment and Accreditation” (A&A) process as required by the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) of 2002. Exceptions identified in the A&A process are noted in a Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M) and will be addressed at quickly as available resources will allow. We expect that ShakeAlert will operate with waivers under a conditional ATO for the foreseeable future because full compliance, with no exceptions or waivers, would require operating within existing government data centers which would cause unacceptable delays for incoming data streams and outgoing alerts.
